Tips on Applying Cologne Properly

  1. The thing that seemingly makes the most sense when putting cologne on is to spray the product onto your clothing. However, this isn't a good idea because some colognes are colored and will potentially stain your clothes.
  2. For men who like to use aftershave, only use the same brand of aftershave as your cologne. For example, if you are using "Johnny’s Aftershave for Men", then you should only use "Johnny’s Cologne for Men" so as not to layer scents that don’t flatter each other. Layering scents is fine as long as they are similar in smell to one another.
  3. You can reapply cologne once during the day - although most cologne will last all day. Of course, this is determined by how well your body's personal acidity level will hold up when combined with the oils found in cologne.
  4. It may sound odd to hear that colognes and perfumes have an expiration date, but they do, and it is important to keep them in mind; the average bottle of fragrance has a timeline of 3-5 years. If you happen to lose track of when you bought your cologne, you can call the manufacturer for instructions on how to find out when your bottle expires. Use the cologne at your own risk after 5 years of having the same bottle. Old cologne tends to smell more like alcohol - or something else - other than the original scent. And since you've had the bottle for such a long time, the odds of you liking it are low.
  5. Do research first before purchasing any cologne, look at what other men have to say about a brand, see how long it lasts, and find out if women like it. The way other people respond is important because nine times out of ten, the majority rules.

How to Apply Cologne Properly

Man applying cologne

Cologne is an important part of a man's daily routine…..at least it should be. After all, simply using just soap and water isn’t enough for some women since they like to smell a little cologne as well. Fortunately, cologne doesn't have to be expensive, so choose one that fits your budget. Also keep in mind that body sprays are not the same as colognes, and should only be used when deodorant and/or cologne isn't around. The reason why is because body sprays have too much alcohol in them, and this causes the smell to wear off when combined with your body's sweat. Getting back to the subject, here is a look at how you should apply cologne for the best results.

Getting Started

Throughout the seasons, your body's temperature fluctuates, and so should your cologne. Think of cologne as you would clothing, and choose two different products to wear in the Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter seasons. Because the body becomes warmer in the spring and summer, you'll want to have a scent that is light like your shorts and t-shirt, instead of something heavy like a sweater in the winter. Test the cologne out before purchasing it, and don't go to the store expecting to buy one right away; take your time in choosing so that you're sure you have the right scent.

Making Cologne Last

After you've found the right cologne, you'll need to know how to properly apply it to your skin. It seems easy enough to remove the cap and then spray; however, if you're not spraying the cologne in the proper place, you'll just be wasting it. So use your own body heat to keep the fragrance from becoming a dull scent that only you can smell. To do this, you need to know your body's pulse points, which are the areas of the body that give off the most heat since they have blood vessels nearest to the skin.

xfoliating Homemade Body Scrubs
with Simple Sugar & Salt Recipes for the Home Kitchen

Body scrubs have always been a beauty must. Cleopatra's slaves rubbed her down with granulated honey and myrrh, an upscale version of the scrubs of pumice, barley hulls and goat's milk used by lesser Egyptians of the day. Body scrubs have proliferated lately, with recipes including grains, nut shells, sea shells, salts and other minerals scrape-scrape-scraping away the layers and leaving fresh, new skin behind.
Make Your Own Body Scrub

It's Easy to Make Body Scrubs at Home

You may have noticed that you're paying a lot of dough for a handful of scrub. Read the ingredients: you're paying for sexy packaging! Most scrubs contain salt, sugar or nut shells and you can buy any of those things for well under fifty cents a pound. But the seven ounce coconut scrub from The Body Shop sells for $17. How long does it take to use up less than one cup of body scrub? Not long!

Laura Mercier

Laura’s Philosphy

Laura Mercier's philosophy is simple. Making your skin look perfect is the first and most important thing you can do to achieve a truly great look. The key is to enhance your natural beauty - accentuate the positive.

Laura’s History
Raised in Provence, Laura Mercier began her training at age 17 when she entered painting school in Paris. After deciding to shift her talents from the canvas to the face, Mercier attended the Carita School where she specialized in makeup application. Subsequently, she was asked to represent the school as a makeup artist and instructor. Before long she began working closely with Thibault Vabre, a well-known French makeup artist.

In 1985, Laura Mercier moved to New York when she was asked to join the team to launch American Elle. She immediately began working on advertising campaigns for Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale's, and Clairol, as well as editorial spreads for magazines including Elle, Vanity Fair, Glamour, and Seventeen. While working with clients such as L'Oreal, Maybelline, Victoria's Secret, Gap, Banana Republic and many other cosmetic and clothing companies, Mercier began working with Madonna on her looks for print, television and film. Subsequently, Mercier entered into a four-year contract with Elizabeth Arden designing the makeup looks for all of their advertising campaigns and she also worked with Chanel on the company's beauty advertising campaigns in France.

In 1996, Mercier developed her own line to benefit women of all ages and skin types. She personally created the colors to satisfy the needs of her clients, based on a classic and always-current palette, rather than seasonal trends only. The line, now in its ninth year, is available in 400 stores in 21 countries and has expanded to include skincare, bath and body and fragrance lines. Mercier makes national and international public appearances throughout the year at stores including Neiman Marcus, Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, and selected Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom stores.

Paul Mitchell

Paul Mitchell is one of the biggest names in the hair care world today. They have revolutionary products and ideals and salons all over the world. Learn more about Paul Mitchell and their products below:

How It All Began

In 1979, John Paul DeJoria and Paul Mitchell first decided to launch a professional hair care system. They envisioned a company established by hairdressers for hairdressers - a venture dedicated to the success of individual stylists, their salons, and the professional beauty industry as a whole. By 1980, they established a partnership with a borrowed $750.00 which eventually became known as John Paul Mitchell
Systems. The two partners began marketing their products under the brand name Paul Mitchell, as Mr. Mitchell was the hairdresser and other hairdressers would respect his name. Initially, John Paul Mitchell Systems faced many challenges. According to Mr. DeJoria, “We should have gone bankrupt perhaps 50 times during the first year.” Resources were so limited that the Paul Mitchell brand's now-famous black and white packaging was a result of not being able to afford color ink.

The partners' marketing strategy stemmed from their convictions. Mitchell and DeJoria traveled extensively to conduct no-cost product demonstrations for salon owners. In addition, they guaranteed salon owners would sell all products purchased; if they didn't, they could return any unsold products for a full refund. Such practices represented a first for the hair care industry, and eventually led to John Paul Mitchell Systems becoming one of the fastest growing privately-held companies in the United States.

Almay

Almay is a company that believes in naturally beautiful skin. They are a revolutionary company that is constantly changing the face of beauty. Learn more about Almay’s approach to beauty below:

Almay’s History

Fanny May Woititz had delicate skin. It was 1930, and cosmetics were heavy and thick, made with strong pigments and powerful chemicals, too harsh for Fanny May’s complexion.

Her husband Alfred was a professional chemist, and a relentless tinkerer. He started experimenting with his wife’s makeup, testing and trying to figure out which ingredients were irritants.

He enlisted a renowned dermatologist, Dr. Marion Sulzberger, to help with the experiments. Together they devised a formula for cosmetics that were pure and gentle enough for Fanny May to use every day.

Need meets invention, and beautiful things happen. Combining the names of the founders, Alfred and Fanny May, Almay was established in 1931 to manufacture their new, gentler cosmetics for women everywhere.

Hypo-Allergenic

Fewer than 500 ingredients of the 10,000 available for use in cosmetics meet Almay’s performance standard for superior performance without irritation. New ingredients and technologies are stringently tested before they may be used by Almay.

Jane represents every girl.

Rimmel

Rimmel is a cosmetics line that has been around for nearly 200 hunderd years and is still going strong today. Learn more about Rimmel’s incredible story below:

Nearly Two Centuries Old

Beauty loves a legend, and legends don’t come much more compelling than the story behind Rimmel, one of the world’s oldest cosmetics brands. In 1820, a respected French perfumer who had been trained by the famous Lubin, perfumer to Empress Josephine, the wife of Napoleon I, accepted an invitation to manage a perfumery in London’s prestigious Bond Street. By 1834, the move to London had proved so successful that, together with his son and apprentice Eugene Rimmel, then aged just 14, he opened a perfumery of his own. The House of Rimmel was established.

As the business flourished, so too did the talents of Eugene Rimmel. By the age of 24, he had become, not only an expert perfumer, but also a cosmetics visionary, experimenting with fragrance and colour, and travelling the world in search of exotic ingredients and new ideas. A pioneer of personal hygiene, he developed some truly innovative products, including mouth rinses, fragranced pomades and an ingenious scented steam vaporiser, while high society flocked to his flagship perfumery in Regent Street to purchase an extensive range of exquisitely packaged perfumes, soaps and bath essences, many of them bearing royal warrants.

Even at this very early stage, Eugene Rimmel sensed the potential of advertising to bring his products to a wider public, and began to publish lavishly illustrated mail order catalogues and to place advertisements in theatre programmes. When he died in 1887, his two sons inherited his beauty empire, building on their father’s success internationally by developing an extensive colour line with a special focus on eye-enhancing products, in particular Rimmel’s revolutionary mascaras. So popular did they become that “rimmel” is to this day the word for mascara in several languages!

Sally Beauty

How it all began

Sally Beauty Supply began as one store in New Orleans in 1964. Through a series of acquisitions and new store openings in the 1970s, 80s and 90s, and ongoing, the company now owns and operates more than 2,100 stores throughout the United States and Puerto Rico and more than 3,000 worldwide.

The phenomenal growth of Sally Beauty Supply has been guided by Michael H. Renzulli, president and chief executive officer. A trained pharmacist, he spent his youth and the beginning of his career in his father’s Philadelphia drugstore. He joined a major package goods manufacturer and, in 1972, took over management of Sally Beauty Supply. His ability to successfully blend consumer and professional distribution has been responsible for Sally’s exceptional growth.

Because Renzulli keeps Sally Beauty on the cutting edge of new trends and technology, salon professionals look to Sally for information as well as product. At the same time, consumers can find the same products their hair stylists and nail technicians use, which allows them to maintain their professionally created look between salon visits.

International Expansion

In 1987, Sally became the only international beauty supply company when it purchased the largest beauty supply organization in the United Kingdom, where currently more than 175 Sally stores exist.

In 1994, Sally announced a joint venture agreement with C&C, Cash & Carry Beauty Supply, which allowed the chain to enter the Japanese market. Sally Beauty Supply now operates 32 stores in Japan. Six years later, Sally Beauty expanded to Puerto Rico. Today, there are 29 extremely successful stores in this country.
