With FDA approving the controversial shot in 2002, more than two million people undergo Botox every year. Yet, more often than not, when I recommend it to a client, the first reaction is, "I don't need it yet; I am not that old." So despite the growing popularity or acceptance of the procedure, there are still a lot of misconceptions about Botox. And more than a cosmetic makeover, what most people need is an attitude adjustment. And that can only happen if you are armed with the correct information about the procedure.
What is Botox?
Botox is one of the many trade names for the neurotoxic protein called botulinum toxin, which is used in a diluted form in cosmetic therapy to treat moderate to severe furrows, wrinkles, and facial creases. The protein stops muscle contractions by blocking nerve impulses, which helps in easing out wrinkles. It's not a permanent solution, and you'll need to repeat the procedure once the effect wears off in four to six months. However, with each session, the severity of wrinkles are reduced as the muscles get trained to relax.
Is it harmful?
You must have heard people say it is, but get it here from me (a professional who administers Botox on people practically every day): Botox is safe when administered by a qualified expert, and if you follow the post-treatment instructions given by your doctor. However, you may experience minor side-effects like a slight headache or nausea. It is best to have a consultation session with your doctor to clarify all your doubts before opting for the procedure. Discuss all your concerns freely with your consultant, and update him or her about your medical history. With these details taken care of, you can rest assured that the treatment will be safe.
Will you end up with a 'frozen' look?
Botox will not make you look 'expressionless'. When injected into the right muscles and in the proper dosage, the result will be very natural. It is only when people obsess about each and every line on their face, and ask for all of them to be removed, that one ends up looking frozen.
What is the right age to opt for Botox?
Whether you are 19 or 90, Botox can be done as and when you feel the need for it. I primarily recommend it as an anti-ageing procedure, and advise my patients for it as early as the 30s for any and all muscles that pull your face down-like the muscles between the brows, along the lower jaw, the ones in the corner of your mouth, and the neck. Done in time, it keeps the face from sagging, and helps you look younger for longer. Botox can also be done to 'improve' features. For instance, it can give your round brow a sexy arch; it can help soften a heavy jaw, or relax the bulge under your eyes. I myself started taking Botox shots from the time I turned 32 to slow down the ageing process, as well as to sculpt my flabby cheeks, and I must admit it feels great when people look at me and are surprised to know that I am a mother to a teenage daughter
